Let's go.

00:00:43.021 --> 00:00:55.293
What is going on, my people, and welcome back to another episode of the Modern Leadership Podcast, and today we are talking about how your full-time job can speed up the growth in your business.

00:00:55.293 --> 00:00:57.426
Now, we actually did a workshop on this.

00:00:57.426 --> 00:00:59.106
It was kind of like a rather long workshop.

00:00:59.106 --> 00:01:00.625
I think I talked a little bit too much on that one.

00:01:00.625 --> 00:01:09.441
I'm on our YouTube channel where we broke down like eight different ways that our career actually sped up the process of us being able to create more income in our business.

00:01:10.525 --> 00:01:36.060
But we wanted to come in here real quick and just really call out to a couple different things that we were talking about on that workshop, because a lot of times, I think people feel that because they're working full time, it's actually slowing down the process of them growing their business and it's actually something getting in their way when, in reality, when you're able to see things differently which is what we love to do here on Modern Leadership is we see things with our modern leader lens you realize that that can actually speed up the process of the growth of your business.

00:01:36.060 --> 00:01:38.082
So, that being said, how are you doing?

00:01:38.082 --> 00:01:38.903
Welcome back to the show.

00:01:38.903 --> 00:01:39.525
I'm great.

00:01:39.525 --> 00:01:40.406
Welcome back to your show.

00:01:40.406 --> 00:01:44.531
Welcome back to your show, okay, so let's kind of chat about it real quick.

00:01:44.531 --> 00:01:54.986
So, when it comes to that process, let's actually just start off with, like why is it so hard to believe that your full-time job can actually give?

00:01:55.007 --> 00:01:55.811
to your business instead of taking away.

00:01:55.811 --> 00:01:56.355
What do you think it is?

00:01:56.355 --> 00:02:02.125
I think it's because sometimes we feel like one thing takes away from the other.

00:02:02.125 --> 00:02:15.310
So we're thinking well, you know, right now I want to grow my business, but my job is taking away from me being able to spend time on my business, and we wanted to give you a different perspective.

00:02:15.310 --> 00:02:20.560
And I think, with these points, I think we're really going to hit home on this 100%.

00:02:20.639 --> 00:02:27.384
I know we're not going to go into all of them, but when you think about the training that we did give, what was the one for you that seemed to speak loudest to you?

00:02:28.044 --> 00:02:30.026
your business, and I gave different examples.

00:02:30.026 --> 00:02:31.448
One particular one was public speaking.

00:02:31.448 --> 00:02:52.433
So I wanted to grow in being able to give presentations and just speak in public.

00:02:52.433 --> 00:03:19.268
So I decided I was going to join a Toastmasters club and I did that through my job and I think I got reimbursed for it, if I remember correctly, and that was something that was really helpful because it gave me the ability to grow in that area in communication, in public speaking and that is what I'm using right now, right as we speak, the things that I learned from that.

00:03:19.268 --> 00:03:28.663
I'm using it in our business, using it in our business.

00:03:28.663 --> 00:03:30.986
So that is something that really, I think is one of the main topics.

00:03:30.986 --> 00:03:33.151
I think that has really helped, yeah.

00:03:33.551 --> 00:03:40.012
Yeah, when you think about this, when you think about the skills that we have developed prior to creating a business, right?

00:03:40.012 --> 00:03:56.212
So whether it's me working 20 years at LAPD, working at UCLA Medical Center, all the other odd jobs, working as a security officer, working at Magic Mountain, working at a movie theater all of those things have developed skills that we can actually use in our business, right?

00:03:56.212 --> 00:04:09.735
And I remember when I was getting to the end with LAPD is I would ask myself, how can I attend trainings here that are going to make me a better police sergeant but also translate into making me a better business owner?

00:04:09.735 --> 00:04:27.329
And so there was very specific trainings that, even in the police field whether it's about communicating or having conversations with people, like all the different skills I know we were talking about this in the workshop is like I got really good with being able to accept negative criticism being a police officer and getting people to tell me things like that.

00:04:27.329 --> 00:04:31.350
You wouldn't normally tell people right, because they were upset or frustrated or whatever.

00:04:31.350 --> 00:04:38.334
Right, they weren't mad at me, it was just the system or the uniform that I was wearing, right, and so those skills are actually things that I was able to develop.

00:04:38.334 --> 00:04:40.754
So when I came here to business, I didn't have to develop them again.

00:04:41.764 --> 00:04:54.790
There's so many people who've developed skills, from cashiers to sales, to marketing, to what do you call it Customer service, like all those kinds of things where you actually get to take all of those skills with you into your business.

00:04:54.790 --> 00:04:56.511
Otherwise you'd have to learn them.

00:04:56.511 --> 00:05:03.430
You would still have to learn them, but you'd have to learn them through the school of hard knocks usually, which is like you failing and then try to do it a little bit better.

00:05:03.430 --> 00:05:03.612
Right.

00:05:03.612 --> 00:05:16.494
But anytime that we think about the skills and the things that we've learned in our job and how we can bring that into business, it now allows us to use our career in a way to propel us forward in business, and I know we talked about this too.

00:05:16.494 --> 00:05:23.870
When you think about some of the skills that you can actually get paid for right now, like you just said, they're like they reimbursed me for it.

00:05:23.870 --> 00:05:39.346
They're literally paying for you to become a better speaker, because it's going to help them at UCLA, but it's also going to help you in your business, and so when I think about that, I think about what are some skills that will help me increase both, because I also don't want to do what some people do, which is give the bare minimum.

00:05:39.346 --> 00:05:41.192
I didn't want to just give the bare minimum at work.

00:05:41.192 --> 00:05:50.557
I still wanted to give and be the best that I could be, but I wanted to use it more of like an opportunity to grow there as a police sergeant but also in business.

00:05:50.557 --> 00:05:53.947
So I really do like that skills piece.

00:05:54.889 --> 00:05:58.958
For me, one of the things that really helped was the credibility that it brought.

00:05:58.958 --> 00:06:04.810
So many people forget they think that when they start business, that everything that happened before this didn't happen.

00:06:04.810 --> 00:06:15.529
But if I'm having a conversation with somebody and I talk about being a police sergeant for LAPD for 20 years, it gives me some credibility when it comes to conversations, leadership, communication, all that kind of stuff.

00:06:15.529 --> 00:06:21.776
Because I did that for 20 years and realizing that while you're there you can still gain that credibility right.

00:06:21.776 --> 00:06:25.536
So while I was at LAPD for a long time I never talked about my business.

00:06:25.536 --> 00:06:29.471
I never did anything like that because it was kind of against the rules to recruit people.

00:06:30.052 --> 00:06:42.173
But then I realized, like this skill that I learned life and performance coaching can help so much and I've already seen it help so many citizens that I've actually come into contact with who in the worst time of their life.

00:06:42.173 --> 00:06:53.771
I was able to help them out and them write me commendations and, like you know, say all these kudos to me, because I took the approach of really caring about them, being empathetic and asking them questions.

00:06:53.771 --> 00:07:06.134
And so while I was doing that, I actually approached some of the leaders at LAPD and asked them if I could give teaching and training and things on the things that I was really good at, and so they gave me extra credibility.

00:07:06.134 --> 00:07:13.209
So when I left, not only did I have 20 years experience, but I also had doing teachings and trainings and people had been calling on me.

00:07:13.209 --> 00:07:17.031
Commanders were like, hey, could you give this presentation to my squad?

00:07:17.031 --> 00:07:20.553
And I became that person that people knew as doing that.

00:07:20.613 --> 00:07:26.057
Clients still come forward from that respect, but it gave me so much credibility to carry on into my business.

00:07:26.057 --> 00:07:41.175
Because when you hear me doing those things, when you hear me being on the front lines, the decisions I had to make sometimes were like life and death situations.

00:07:41.175 --> 00:07:46.132
You're kind of okay with me helping you with business decisions, right, because of the credibility that we had there.

00:07:46.132 --> 00:07:50.434
And you're no different Meaning you, the podcast listener, are no different.

00:07:50.434 --> 00:07:59.627
You've been able to experience some type of credibility from your work, from your job, the things that you've been able to learn, the things you've Now, are going to be able to carry over into your business.

00:07:59.627 --> 00:08:12.389
It's just are you willing to see it as your superpower, or are you going to continue to use it as your kryptonite and have it hold you down when, in reality, it could be the thing that propels you forward even more?

00:08:12.389 --> 00:08:14.375
What do you have to say about that?

00:08:15.492 --> 00:08:21.949
No, I think it's great and I think it's a way of seeing the opportunities rather than the challenges 100%.

00:08:21.949 --> 00:08:31.391
Because, rather than thinking, hey, this is taking from me, just like I said before, this is taking time away from me, it's more of.

00:08:31.391 --> 00:08:48.024
I don't see this as a challenge, this more as an opportunity to really get better, so that when I go full time, if that's what you decide to do with your business, then you're going to have so much to be able to give in that respect.

00:08:48.610 --> 00:08:49.215
Well, I'm curious.

00:08:49.215 --> 00:08:54.176
I do want to ask you one follow-up question, because you're talking about that like challenges versus opportunities.

00:08:54.176 --> 00:08:58.890
How do you get yourself to focus on them being more opportunities than challenges?

00:08:59.653 --> 00:09:06.378
yeah, it's really thinking of like, like we've talked before, it's like the stories that you tell yourself, right, like, how are you seeing this?

00:09:06.378 --> 00:09:08.182
Like, what perspective are you seeing this from?

00:09:08.182 --> 00:09:15.813
Are you seeing this from like, oh man, I can't wait to leave this job because you know, whatever is going on it's toxic?

00:09:15.813 --> 00:09:21.831
Or like, hey, this is my reality right now and there's only so much I can control.

00:09:21.831 --> 00:09:23.014
What can I control?

00:09:23.014 --> 00:09:26.562
Can I control getting some type of training?

00:09:26.562 --> 00:09:43.503
Can I control maybe earning and we'll talk about this a little bit later but saving some money right now that I do have a full-time job and I have a stable income so that when I go into my business, I have some cash aid that I can feel good about.

00:09:43.503 --> 00:09:50.761
So it's about having a different perspective and thinking like how is this an opportunity for me right now?

00:09:51.309 --> 00:09:51.610
I love that.

00:09:51.610 --> 00:09:52.153
I love that.

00:09:52.153 --> 00:09:52.734
I love that.

00:09:52.734 --> 00:09:59.022
One of the speed hacks that comes up for me, too, is just being able to coach yourself and being able to find those stories.

00:09:59.583 --> 00:10:09.440
But there's there's a lot of times that I have like, because I have the behind the scenes view of my own life, that my limiting beliefs get in the way, and one of the ways that I help tackle this is the people that I surround myself with, right?

00:10:09.440 --> 00:10:22.452
I mean, it's literally why we do these podcasts, why we have our inner circle and all the things that we do, is because, when they say, your average of the five people you spend the most time with, it's very easy because their actions, their beliefs, their thoughts, all of those things are very contagious.

00:10:22.452 --> 00:10:30.211
Try hanging out with somebody who's positive all the time, and after doing that for a series of days, you're going to realize that it's just so much easier to be positive.

00:10:30.211 --> 00:10:31.832
And the opposite is true, too.

00:10:31.832 --> 00:10:36.599
If people are negative or they're gossiping, it's very easy to get into that because it's contagious.

00:10:36.599 --> 00:10:41.865
We all want to fit in and that's like a desire that we all have that's woven into our subconscious mind, right?

00:10:41.865 --> 00:10:44.996
And so how I use this as my superpower is.

00:10:44.996 --> 00:10:46.981
I find people that I do want to fit in with.

00:10:46.981 --> 00:10:52.643
I find people who have the same values and goals, but they have higher standards.

00:10:52.643 --> 00:11:01.638
People who are positive, who know how to reframe, who are coaches, honestly, and when they're able to do that, it makes it so much easier for me to do that too.

00:11:01.658 --> 00:11:04.815
Um, now, I know we kind of talked about this, but that's literally what we have the inner circle for.

00:11:04.815 --> 00:11:16.134
Right is because we want to make sure that we can help support people on youtube and inside of our app so that we can help them reframe it right, because in the moment when they're going through that thing, I was diagnosed with cro disease.

00:11:16.134 --> 00:11:26.951
It sucked, nobody was going to be able to tell me that it was an opportunity, but by being surrounded, surrounding myself with the right people, I slowly did get to see different ways that I could see it as an opportunity.

00:11:26.951 --> 00:11:36.778
Different questions that people could ask me to kind of like challenge it to where I was right there and getting myself to see like me, seeing that as a challenge and something that's going to like ruin whatever.

00:11:36.778 --> 00:11:38.802
I was actually causing me to manifest that?

00:11:38.802 --> 00:11:47.595
Because I was feeling depressed and I was not doing things that I needed to do, and being able to be in that environment helped lift me up, and that's really why we created our Inner Circle.

00:11:48.457 --> 00:11:57.399
Now, if you're somebody who never heard about the Inner Circle, it's a program that we actually have on YouTube where every other week, we get together, we do a live call similar to the one that we had here today.

00:11:57.399 --> 00:12:16.543
We're talking about how your full-time job can serve your business, and we also have access to our private app, where people get an opportunity to jump in there, have a conversation with us, ask questions, be around 4,000 plus entrepreneurs who are family-driven, who want to build a business they love, connect deeper with their family and get their physical, mental health on point, if that's something you're ever interested in.

00:12:16.543 --> 00:12:18.466
It's like $10 a month Head over.

00:12:18.466 --> 00:12:25.318
I'll leave you the description or I'll leave you the information inside of the show notes so you can click over there to learn a little bit more about it, but it's really powerful.

00:12:25.318 --> 00:12:31.301
We also open up our YouTube and our podcast to some of our members, right?

00:12:31.350 --> 00:12:45.979
So we ask our members of the Inner Circle to come on and give training to our people and then also talk about their business and how they could actually be used in terms of to serve the people in our community, because our goal is not to just have everybody work with us.

00:12:45.979 --> 00:12:55.494
Our goal is to have a community where everybody can find somebody else that they really need within the community and hire them, whether you're the person who's getting hired or you're the person who needs to hire someone.

00:12:55.494 --> 00:12:57.677
That's why we have such a really powerful team.

00:12:57.677 --> 00:13:04.096
I know right now we have Kurt, who's doing a lot of people's podcasts and stuff like that Audio editing and things like that.

00:13:04.096 --> 00:13:10.264
He's been a DJ forever and he's really great at what he does, and then Aaron, who's our VA, who also is now helping other people.

00:13:10.264 --> 00:13:12.990
So there's so many different opportunities that we have in there.

00:13:12.990 --> 00:13:15.793
If that's ever something that people are interested, definitely go to the show notes.

00:13:16.274 --> 00:13:17.176
All right, guys.

00:13:17.176 --> 00:13:19.618
I appreciate you guys making it to the end of another episode.

00:13:19.618 --> 00:13:22.020
Thank you so much for leaning in.

00:13:22.020 --> 00:13:23.763
Hopefully this conversation has been helpful.

00:13:23.763 --> 00:13:27.647
If you did enjoy this, we have the full video on YouTube.

00:13:27.647 --> 00:13:30.251
We actually opened it up for everyone.

00:13:30.251 --> 00:13:35.030
Generally, our inner circle calls are only available to people in the inner circle, but we opened this one up to everyone on YouTube.

00:13:35.030 --> 00:13:39.494
It talks about what we learned from our full-time jobs that serve us in business.

00:13:39.494 --> 00:13:45.918
So definitely hit us up on our Modern Leadership Modern Leadership Almost messed up on that one On our Modern Leadership YouTube channel.

00:13:45.918 --> 00:13:50.380
Definitely subscribe and, of course, let us know how we're doing here on the podcast.

00:13:50.380 --> 00:13:52.101

00:13:52.101 --> 00:13:55.224
Thank you for what you do out there every single day and keep leading from the front.

00:13:55.224 --> 00:13:55.711
We'll see.
