Let's go.
00:00:43.040 --> 00:00:49.314
What is going on my people and welcome back to another episode of Modern Leadership, the podcast.
00:00:49.314 --> 00:00:51.546
They're probably wondering what are they doing?
00:00:51.546 --> 00:00:52.685
Why are they changing it up?
00:00:52.685 --> 00:00:59.549
And we are here because we are changing it up, so this is not the purpose of this episode.
00:00:59.549 --> 00:01:00.679
We want to give you a little behind the scenes.
00:01:00.679 --> 00:01:03.048
We know we have some people that have been listening to us for a very long time.
00:01:03.539 --> 00:01:15.649
While we went through the many iterations of what this podcast was, from starting off as the first responder fitness podcast, leo, family Fitness and many different other changes that kind of like helped us get started.
00:01:16.632 --> 00:01:35.927
But recently what we've been doing is we have just been taking content from our YouTube channel, from our workshops, and really resharing it here, and one of the things that we've been thinking a lot about is like how can we help our podcast listeners, specifically people who really enjoy podcasts and do it on a different level than we do it on YouTube?
00:01:35.927 --> 00:01:59.405
What I mean by a different level is people enjoy quicker episodes and from what I'm understanding because people have reached out to me and said that this is a good idea is to give some behind the scenes information of some of the things that maybe we're growing through, some of the things that we're actually learning, some of the things that we're experiencing, and then be able to bring you all of that here on the podcast in a very short, tight-knit episode.
00:01:59.405 --> 00:02:00.406
So that's what we're gonna be doing.
00:02:00.406 --> 00:02:16.574
We're gonna be making a little bit of a change on the podcast Still going to get one episode a week and we're going to be really taking your questions, your advice, your direction because the best person to help us steer the direction of the podcast is you guys and to see how best we can support you.
00:02:16.594 --> 00:02:17.298
So, without further ado, here we are.
00:02:17.298 --> 00:02:23.831
By the way, my beautiful and amazing co-host is with me here, teresa, who is a very important part of our Modern Leadership brand.
00:02:23.831 --> 00:02:27.919
She's also going to be on the podcast and we're just going to have some really deep, great conversations.
00:02:27.919 --> 00:02:29.585
I said deep conversations, but probably not.
00:02:30.669 --> 00:02:30.990
Why not?
00:02:31.772 --> 00:02:32.093
Why not?
00:02:32.093 --> 00:02:32.375
Why not?
00:02:32.375 --> 00:02:35.223
So welcome, welcome, how you doing Thanks.
00:02:35.804 --> 00:02:37.967
Thank you for welcoming me to your home.
00:02:37.967 --> 00:02:39.230
It's really nice.
00:02:39.230 --> 00:02:40.933
Okay, the operative starts.
00:02:40.933 --> 00:02:41.842
Yeah, here we go, guys.
00:02:41.901 --> 00:02:48.336
We're just sitting at our, at our uh kitchen table yes, yeah, that's where we do all of our youtube channel, our youtube videos and our podcasts.
00:02:48.336 --> 00:02:51.104
Um, that our kids think we think we're weird.
00:02:51.104 --> 00:02:52.389
You're right, they think we're old.
00:02:52.389 --> 00:02:56.063
We, we would be weird regardless we would.
00:02:56.063 --> 00:02:57.068
We would be, we would be.
00:02:57.068 --> 00:03:06.093
But before this gets off into a million different directions, we actually do have a topic that we want to talk about here today and it's something that people requested inside of our app.
00:03:06.093 --> 00:03:15.229
So, um, one of the things you guys will hear is we're going to share like a whole bunch of behind the scenes stuff with you guys here today, some of the things that maybe we're helping some clients through, some of the things that we're working through.
00:03:15.229 --> 00:03:20.506
But you'll hear us talk about, like our app or inner circle or success pods, all that kind of stuff.
00:03:20.506 --> 00:03:28.556
We're going to just be as raw as we can here and just share as much as we possibly like whatever comes up, and we're not going to be like editing this podcast.
00:03:28.556 --> 00:03:35.625
Thankfully, kurt, who is our podcast and YouTube producer, he's not going to have to do much here other than make it sound like that.
00:03:35.625 --> 00:03:51.847
I actually know what I'm talking about, but besides that, we're just going to be going and rolling with whatever kind of comes up, and inside of our app, which we actually put together for our book club, they actually ask us questions all the time, and a lot of those questions I think would make a really good podcast episode.
00:03:51.847 --> 00:03:56.049
So one of the questions that somebody asks is like what are you guys growing through right now?
00:03:56.049 --> 00:03:58.379
So I'm going to open it up to Teresa in a second.
00:03:58.923 --> 00:04:37.124
But one of the things that I like to always think about is like our outward success is an expression of our inner growth, and that's something that my mentor, josh Coach, taught me early on is like if I want to be able to actually hit a goal, I have to become somebody different in the process, and that's why I've read so many different books, I've been a part of so many different masterminds, had so many different coaches, and so I know that if I want to, even when it comes to my 100-pound weight loss, in order for me to lose 100 pounds, I had to become the type of person who just ate food that was good for me, exercised, drank water and did all the things that somebody who already had achieved that goal had to do In order to do that.
00:04:37.124 --> 00:04:42.425
I had to become somebody different in the process, and so this growth process is not something that ever ends.
00:04:42.425 --> 00:04:43.107
As a matter of fact.
00:04:43.107 --> 00:04:48.002
As you go, they say new level, new devil, right.
00:04:48.021 --> 00:04:54.850
So that's where this is kind of like coming from, is people hear us talk all the time about how we can help them and make an impact in their lives, and they're really curious, like Marco and Teresa, what are you growing through right now?
00:04:54.850 --> 00:04:55.279
What are you?
00:04:55.279 --> 00:05:00.666
And then we call it growing through, but really it's like a challenge, something we're struggling through and how we're getting through it.
00:05:00.666 --> 00:05:03.610
So I wanted to kind of set that up before I throw it to you.
00:05:03.610 --> 00:05:06.915
So what would you say, like, what are you growing through right now?
00:05:07.696 --> 00:05:36.338
Yeah, well, you know, it's sometimes Well, when I think about growth or when I thought about growth, it was like this combination of things, and I think what I realized recently is that sometimes just focusing on one thing and being intentional with one thing can create more momentum, like picking something that you feel is something you want to work on.
00:05:36.338 --> 00:05:46.975
So for me before it was confidence, and I still work through some of those things because a lot of the things that I do require confidence or they build confidence.
00:05:46.975 --> 00:05:49.708
So for me right now it's networking.
00:05:49.708 --> 00:06:10.110
One of the things and I may go off on a little bit of a tangent, but networking for me is something that I can utilize to really kind of expand my reach and meet new people and get other ideas and maybe start collaborations, partnerships, things like that.
00:06:10.110 --> 00:06:14.586
So that has been kind of my intentional growth plan recently.
00:06:15.348 --> 00:06:44.144
Now the side note that I'm going to talk about is, I think, that just me personally, I have always struggled with conversations and just meeting people and kind of having sort of a social anxiety type thing, and I think that it got worse when I left my job and I stayed home and then, through the pandemic, it's almost like I had to relearn how to communicate with people and how to interact with people, if that makes sense.
00:06:44.144 --> 00:06:50.824
So I feel like pushing myself and getting outside of my comfort zone by networking and meeting new people.
00:06:50.824 --> 00:06:57.535
That'll help me kind of regain some of that confidence that I had kind of lost in that sense.
00:06:57.535 --> 00:07:07.964
So networking is really just reaching out and finding a community of people that you know, I can relate to and that I can learn from.
00:07:07.964 --> 00:07:16.925
So I've joined a coaching community and of course, we have our own network of people that are family driven entrepreneurs.
00:07:16.925 --> 00:07:21.529
So getting to know them and communicating with them has been really great.
00:07:21.529 --> 00:07:27.817
So that has been kind of like my intentional, like right now type growth.
00:07:29.521 --> 00:07:32.944
So I heard a couple different actions and stuff that you're taking related to networking.
00:07:32.944 --> 00:07:37.410
Is there any stories that you tell yourself to get yourself to take action and to do those things?
00:07:38.271 --> 00:07:49.454
Yeah, I mean really it's about like if I put myself out there, if I get outside of that zone of comfort, that I will grow a lot faster.
00:07:50.379 --> 00:08:00.375
Because I feel like sometimes I try to take it easy on myself and I try to stay in my little corner, because it's scary still, even to this day.
00:08:00.500 --> 00:08:19.141
I mean, you know, I've gone through a you know our growth journey for like the past decade and I feel like sometimes I will get in back into that routine of just kind of going off on my own, even with you, right.
00:08:19.161 --> 00:08:23.732
So I feel like I mean that's actually kind of like a thing that I didn't realize I was going to bring up.
00:08:23.732 --> 00:08:47.024
But even working with you on Modern Leadership and it being that partnership which kind of sounds weird because we're married but having that partnership of modern leadership has also kind of helped me grow, because now I don't have to rely on myself to come up with all of the content and ideas and things like that.
00:08:47.024 --> 00:08:52.921
Now we can work and bounce ideas off of each other and we can create something even bigger.
00:08:52.921 --> 00:09:18.235
So maybe kind of like another lesson that I feel like I have been learning is that, you know, just doing things on my own can help me grow, you know, internally and externally, however, finding other people and finding groups and finding community, you know I can grow so much faster because that's just the way it works.
00:09:19.601 --> 00:09:41.572
So yeah, I feel like we can go along on this topic for like an hour just because, like networking and this is maybe something we'll hit up at a future podcast that's definitely something that I help a lot of my clients with right now, because a lot of people have this thought that because social media is such an important thing, that that has to be their plan and social media has to be a part of their business or they're not going to have success.
00:09:41.572 --> 00:09:50.428
And I have seen many clients who are no longer doing social media and making a huge impact in the world, and that's something that we'll talk about in a future one.
00:09:50.428 --> 00:09:58.190
When it comes to some of the things that we're helping our clients realize, it's those beliefs or those stories that we tell ourselves that we need to be on social media to succeed.
00:09:58.190 --> 00:10:21.666
And that's the reason why I asked you that question about networking, because we have a lot of people who listen to the podcast and are on our YouTube channel, who have gone through our Life Coach Certification, our Life and Performance Coach Certification, and so it's the stories that we tell ourselves that get us to take action, which, for you, it's networking, getting yourself to go out there and if you remind yourself like, hey, this is my greatest opportunity to learn, it's going to help me learn and put the speed boost on.
00:10:21.666 --> 00:10:26.782
That is, if something you believe, you'll actually go out there and you'll take that kind of action.
00:10:26.782 --> 00:10:28.546
So I love that.
00:10:28.546 --> 00:10:28.826
I love that.
00:10:28.885 --> 00:10:38.202
Okay, so sorry, two things that I would say that I'm growing through, one personal and one business related.
00:10:38.202 --> 00:10:45.666
So the business one right now is I'm learning how to say no to the good so I could say yes to the great.
00:10:45.666 --> 00:10:55.166
So early on in business, I was saying yes to everyone because I'm like I just want to be on platforms, I just want to get some help, I just want to be able to be in front of people and get them to see my skills.
00:10:55.166 --> 00:11:05.698
Right now, I'm at the point where people are reaching out to me and asking me to teach inside of their programs, for me to take on extra responsibilities, and it's not like a hey, would you like to do this for free?
00:11:05.698 --> 00:11:07.346
It's like we will pay you for this.
00:11:07.346 --> 00:11:28.307
And the hard thing for me recently is learning how to say no to those things, because it's like before I could just say yes to everything because I was growing a business right, but now that I have modern leadership, I do the stuff with legacy leadership related to the life and performance coach certification that I co-created, and then the master coach training program that I created, and then the dad edge.
00:11:28.307 --> 00:11:35.889
Now, now being a part of their team and having other people reach out to me, it's like, well, what do I have to eliminate in order to continue to grow?
00:11:35.889 --> 00:11:37.052
And I don't like that.
00:11:37.052 --> 00:11:43.109
I don't like the idea of eliminating something because my brain goes into scarcity mode of like, well, what's going to happen?
00:11:43.109 --> 00:11:53.427
Like if I go all in with all my eggs in one basket and then something happens there, right, but that is definitely a scarcity mindset, so I'm learning how to process it by.
00:11:53.488 --> 00:11:56.813
Number one slowing down and not making a decision in the moment.
00:11:56.813 --> 00:11:59.428
Number two bouncing off of you and Kurt.
00:11:59.428 --> 00:12:01.456
I know we talked about Kurt a little bit.
00:12:01.456 --> 00:12:05.006
He's our podcast and video producer, but he's a lot more than that.
00:12:05.006 --> 00:12:25.484
He's like the number two in our company, with me and you being number one and then him being number two, and we bounce a lot of ideas off him, of course, josh and all the other mentors and stuff that we have, but slowing down enough to not immediately say yes and just say, hey, let me think about this, has given me a little bit more confidence to make that decision, knowing that I can always go back and make a different decision the next time.
00:12:25.484 --> 00:12:37.918
So that's what I would say is the first thing that I'm growing through, and the second thing you know this is sleep is like I'm trying to figure out the best, and I always try to figure out the best of all of this stuff.
00:12:37.938 --> 00:12:47.384
Right, I'm trying to figure out the best like strategy for sleep, because with my Crohn's disease I have issues where I wake up several times throughout the night.
00:12:47.384 --> 00:12:49.418
So on a good night I'll wake up six or seven times.
00:12:49.418 --> 00:12:51.337
On a bad night, I'll wake up 10 to 12 times.
00:12:51.337 --> 00:12:53.534
Sometimes I don't get back to sleep up six or seven times.
00:12:53.534 --> 00:12:56.440
On a bad night, I'll wake up 10 to 12 times, sometimes I don't get back to sleep.
00:12:56.460 --> 00:13:18.159
And it's because of my career as an LAPD officer and a sergeant for 20 years that I developed Crohn's disease and it was something that was activated in my body because of the stress and working weird, odd hours for 20 years got to me and so it got to the point where, like for the last eight years before I came home and retired right Retired is funny, by the way.
00:13:18.159 --> 00:13:19.972
My mom thinks I'm just retired sitting at home.
00:13:19.972 --> 00:13:21.457
So I'm like I'm running a business here.
00:13:21.457 --> 00:13:22.341
Give me a break here.
00:13:22.341 --> 00:13:23.851
Right, I was like but you're retired.
00:13:25.173 --> 00:13:45.817
But when I think about like eight years of being on the, going to bed at 6 pm and waking up at 2 am, that's kind of like how my body has been trained and I'm getting a lot of like information from doctors and I have my aura ring and stuff like that that tells you like to sleep in a little bit later than that and potentially go to sleep a little bit later because the sun's out and circadian rhythm and all that stuff.
00:13:45.817 --> 00:13:57.284
And I've tried to make adjustments and I've gotten to the point where I go to sleep between six and seven and I wake up around three, and now I'm trying to push that back to four and I tried to do that this week.
00:13:57.284 --> 00:13:58.692
It didn't work out.
00:13:58.692 --> 00:14:00.154
You did it two days.
00:14:00.697 --> 00:14:01.418
I did it two days.
00:14:01.960 --> 00:14:02.520
And here's the thing.
00:14:02.520 --> 00:14:04.611
This is where the logic comes into my brain.
00:14:04.611 --> 00:14:05.673
It's hard to get rid of it.
00:14:05.673 --> 00:14:10.821
When I wake up at four o'clock, my universal prime time is the morning time.
00:14:10.821 --> 00:14:18.000
The kids are asleep, you're asleep, the puppy's asleep, like I literally can, in one hour, get done five hours worth of work.
00:14:18.000 --> 00:14:34.583
And when I give up an hour from three to four and I wake up at four, it feels like I have to try to cram everything in and I can't get it in and then I run out of time because we have all the other things that we're going to be doing, and then the kids are awake and all we're going to be doing, and then the kids are awake and all, and then it's like I can still get work done, but it's not to the same level.
00:14:34.583 --> 00:14:41.250
And so when I think about that, like for the last two days, like I don't have anything on my schedule, I'll be like I'll sleep until four, like today, for example.
00:14:41.331 --> 00:14:42.471
Right, so we were.
00:14:42.471 --> 00:14:47.717
We've been rethinking about like this podcast and what we're going to brainstorm it, to put it all together, because once business ends, it's done right.
00:14:47.717 --> 00:14:57.918
I know we got to go out and get the puppy Puppy's coming home today.
00:14:57.918 --> 00:15:06.192
We just got back from Vegas, so we let the puppy stay over somebody's house a dog trainer and so we're bringing him back and it's just going to bring in some extra chaos.
00:15:06.192 --> 00:15:15.924
And so for my brain, it's like the only time that I really don't have that chaos is in the morning, and if I'm sleeping at that time, instead it kind of feels like I lose something in that respect.
00:15:15.924 --> 00:15:16.586
Does that make sense?
00:15:16.745 --> 00:15:23.039
Yeah, and I know you're looking at me and you're smiling because you I'm like an odd in my head right now, but we'll take that offline.
00:15:23.501 --> 00:15:26.898
Yeah, but no, nothing is taken offline here.
00:15:26.898 --> 00:15:37.024
But yeah, so those are the two things that I'm currently growing through is trying to figure it out, right, so making adjustments, seeing how I can, you know, change things up, see if I can move it back to four.
00:15:37.024 --> 00:15:46.696
Maybe it's just something that you know change sucks, right, change feels sucky, and so in the moment, maybe I just need to like force it for like a week or two and figure out what's going on, right.
00:15:46.696 --> 00:15:51.681
So it might be something that that experience will help me grow through it.
00:15:51.681 --> 00:15:55.465
And maybe it's just like no, maybe three o'clock is my time to wake up in the morning time.
00:15:55.485 --> 00:16:03.470
Even though everybody thinks I'm weird for doing that, I'm telling you, the amount of stuff that I get done before the kids or the rest of the world wakes up makes me feel super productive.
00:16:03.470 --> 00:16:05.958
But it's also my time when my brain works.
00:16:05.958 --> 00:16:12.697
I wouldn't be telling myself to force myself up if at three o'clock I was exhausted, but to force myself up if at three o'clock I was exhausted.
00:16:12.697 --> 00:16:13.840
But you get past 3 pm, I'm exhausted.
00:16:13.840 --> 00:16:15.403
Don't ask me to do anything then.
00:16:15.403 --> 00:16:19.846
Don't ask me any important questions or decisions to make, because I'm zoned out right.
00:16:19.846 --> 00:16:21.576
So for me in my personal time.
00:16:21.576 --> 00:16:24.798
I feel like that's the best use of it, but we'll see.
00:16:24.798 --> 00:16:25.801
We'll see kind of what happens.
00:16:26.190 --> 00:16:36.565
Yeah, I'm glad you brought that up, because I mean we all go through different things, right, and we're in our 40s, so Wait wait, you are.
00:16:37.931 --> 00:16:39.336
We're in our early 40s.
00:16:39.336 --> 00:16:43.696
Well, you're in your mid 40s, I'm in my early 40s, I have to point that out.
00:16:43.696 --> 00:16:58.499
But like, I think, like we start to go through changes and we start to go through physical changes, and it's really weird because we're aging, right, so of course we're going to go through physical changes.
00:16:58.499 --> 00:17:04.759
So like, for me so yours is sleep and mine is I have no idea what's going on.
00:17:04.759 --> 00:17:07.243
So that affects me too.
00:17:07.243 --> 00:17:19.844
It affects me obviously in my personal life, but it also affects my business, because I, you know, obviously in my personal life, but it also affects my business because I, you know, feel like I have brain fog sometimes and like, even yesterday, we were doing a workshop, a live workshop.
00:17:19.844 --> 00:17:27.612
Normally I'm okay with live workshops, right, like I've grown through that where I can speak in public and it's not a big deal.
00:17:27.632 --> 00:17:29.094
But I was kind of reading some notes and I could not.
00:17:29.094 --> 00:17:40.486
But I was kind of reading some notes and I could not like the sentence just didn't, it seemed jumbled, right, and like I couldn't like spell out the words and it was so weird.
00:17:40.486 --> 00:17:50.223
But that's what's been happening and that's just like one of the many different things that I've been going through and like I'm like well, am I going through perimenopause or what's going on Right?
00:17:50.223 --> 00:17:53.607
Of course I could go to the doctor and try and figure it out perimenopause or what's going on right?
00:17:53.607 --> 00:17:54.990
Of course I could go to the doctor and try and figure it out.
00:17:54.990 --> 00:18:00.490
But just to kind of highlight that you know, we're human right, and it's not just business for us.
00:18:00.490 --> 00:18:11.519
Obviously, we talk about family too, so it's personal and business, but we're also, as humans, going through different things that people don't normally know about us, right.
00:18:11.519 --> 00:18:16.616
So it's, I mean not that anybody cares, but we're going to share it right, we're going to find out.
00:18:16.636 --> 00:18:19.255
We're going to find out which.
00:18:19.255 --> 00:18:20.819
It's already been 17 minutes here.
00:18:20.819 --> 00:18:23.936
That's kind of like what we wanted to be able to do.
00:18:23.936 --> 00:18:30.156
So we would love to hear some feedback from you guys, what you guys think about this episode we are going to well.
00:18:30.156 --> 00:18:36.205
First off, I know that we talked a little bit about growing, and one of the ways that we do that is a lot of the books and stuff that we read.
00:18:36.205 --> 00:18:40.498
So if you are you do not know, we have a free book club that we actually put together.
00:18:40.498 --> 00:18:41.996
We're reading really powerful books.
00:18:41.996 --> 00:18:44.659
Right now we're reading Worthy from Jamie Kern Lima.
00:18:44.659 --> 00:18:47.811
So if that's something you're interested in, I'll leave you that information in the show notes.
00:18:47.811 --> 00:18:51.896
But we also we also would love to hear back from you Did you enjoy this episode?
00:18:52.178 --> 00:18:52.919
Did something?
00:18:52.919 --> 00:18:55.021
Was there something you liked, something you disliked?
00:18:55.021 --> 00:18:56.884
Trust me, I've got thick skin.
00:18:56.884 --> 00:19:01.276
Definitely, let me know, because we want to do our best to really serve you as best as possible.
00:19:01.276 --> 00:19:05.954
And just so you guys know, next week we are going to be releasing another one, just very similar to this.
00:19:05.954 --> 00:19:14.304
We're going to be talking about something that our clients have actually been seeing in terms of like the results that we've been able to help them through and some of the challenges that they've been going through.
00:19:14.304 --> 00:19:20.059
We're going to share some of that on our next podcast, but we appreciate you so much for making it here to the end.
00:19:20.059 --> 00:19:22.278
Definitely, let us know what your feedback is.
00:19:22.278 --> 00:19:25.019
Of course, if you'd like to rate and review the show, we always love that too.
00:19:25.019 --> 00:19:28.334
Thank you so much for what you do out there every single day and we'll see you guys in the
